The punishment for the Saints is fair. They were told to stop the program three years ago, said they would, but kept it going. The coaches and GM lied to the league and their owner who believed the bounty program had been eliminated. Their arrogance and defiance of a league mandate is deserving of the hammer being brought down on them. Does it excuse Goodell’s bad punishment scale for players? No, but the commissioner’s office has higher expectations for the owners, executives, and coaches. They should have followed the orders in 2009. Since they refused, they get what is deserved.
