Not promising a lot of explanation, but let’s get some thoughts out there before I board a plane for Georgia (Yes!!!).
UB
Those expecting sunshine and daisies when it comes to my alma mater may be disappointed. I do think the Bulls will contend for bowl eligibility, but can they get six wins? With Bo Oliver running the ball and Alex Zordich/Joe Licata managing the offense, Buffalo’s going to be better than last year. The defense will be much improved as well, but the Mid American Conference is exactly a league where a defense can dominate. Last year I broke down the schedule into probable wins and losses. Let’s try that again.
Probable wins: Morgan State, at UMass
Probable losses: at Georgia
Would be significant upsets: Pitt, at UConn, at Ohio
Dicey propositions, but winnable: Toledo, Western Michigan, at Northern Illinois
Gotta get it: Kent State, at Bowling Green, Miami
I believe the Bulls will take both from Column A and at least two from the “Gotta Get It” category. Toss in Toledo, WMU or Northern… you’re at five. Which brings us to a road “GGI” at Bowling Green to end the season. I have to believe the majority of Bulls fans would take that.
BCS busters:
It’s easy to toss Boise State out there — and they may get it done — but if Ohio upsets Penn State this emotional weekend at Happy Valley, look out. I think Tyler Tettleton — Mickey’s kid — and the Bobcats will get that upset (6.5 dogs as of publish time) and have the inside track at being undefeated. The other sleeper is Tulsa, who has to contend with late season match-ups at Arkansas and Houston. They bring back QB GJ Kinne, who is pretty consistent.
